Solving Drainage Challenges While Transforming the Birdville High School Courtyard
As part of the 2022 Bond program, Friends Consulting Group (FCG) oversaw the transformation of the Birdville High School courtyard. The project began as a solution to persistent drainage issues but evolved into a complete aesthetic enhancement of the outdoor space. FCG managed the removal of old concrete and retaining walls to make way for extensive earthwork and a new underground storm system. While preserving many existing trees, the team also oversaw the planting of over 50 new ones. A 1,980-square-foot standalone canopy was installed to provide a shaded area for students to enjoy lunch outside. Further upgrades included integral colored concrete, unit pavers, synthetic turf, limestone retaining walls, improved site lighting, and new landscaping. To complete the vibrant, low-maintenance space, custom furniture such as tables, cornhole boards, and ping-pong tables were added, creating a dynamic area for students to relax and connect.

Program Management
As part of the 2022 Birdville ISD Bond program, Friends Consulting Group served as the district and taxpayer advocate during the transformation of the Birdville High School courtyard.
What began as a solution to persistent drainage issues required significant coordination and oversight. FCG managed:
Removal of failing concrete and retaining walls
Extensive earthwork and installation of a new underground stormwater system
Contractor coordination and scope management
Schedule monitoring and quality control
Budget oversight and bond accountability
By addressing infrastructure challenges at the foundation level, FCG ensured the project delivered long-term durability while maximizing bond resources.
Facilities Planning & Site Improvement Oversight
While the initial goal was to correct drainage problems, the project evolved into a comprehensive courtyard enhancement that supports student engagement and campus culture.
Under FCG’s oversight, the project included:
Installation of a 1,980-square-foot standalone canopy for shaded outdoor use
Preservation of mature trees and planting of more than 50 new trees
Integral colored concrete and unit pavers
Limestone retaining walls
Synthetic turf installation
Upgraded site lighting
New landscaping and low-maintenance site features
Custom outdoor furniture, including tables, cornhole boards, and ping-pong tables
The result is a vibrant, durable outdoor space that enhances daily student life while maintaining long-term operational efficiency.
Why This Project Matters for Birdville ISD
Infrastructure failures such as drainage issues can create safety concerns, maintenance burdens, and campus usability challenges. Without proper oversight, projects can become reactive fixes rather than long-term solutions.
Through disciplined program management and bond oversight, Friends Consulting Group helped Birdville ISD transform a problem area into a functional, aesthetically enhanced courtyard that students can enjoy for years to come.
Notably, this project is one of four initiatives FCG has supported within Birdville ISD, reflecting continued district trust in our operational leadership and program management services.
